Registration of SAITM campus students to the KDU start today August 6 amidst strict regulations that those who failed to pay the course-fee by Monday would not be enrolled for the MBBS degree.

The new condition had shattered the dreams of top three students, with the top A/L results to join the University over financial constraints.

It was learned that at least three, including two female students, who have the highest A/L results among the SAITM students, had to give up their enrollment at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) due to financial difficulties.

Among the top results, there are students with 2As and 1 B, 2As and 1C, 1A and 2Bs and learned that most of the scholarship holders are having a Z-Score over 1.7.

Parents of the scholarship holders said the with the Government decided to cancel the scholarships their children had faced a severe inconvenience.

“There is no way that we can find Rs. 1.3 million per annum as course fee. We have written to President Maithripala Sirisena to provide us with a relief,” a parent said.

“Our children received scholarships as they have good A/L results. Their time has been wasted and we are helpless as parents,” the parent told.

The parents said their children were going through a tremendous amount of stress and anxiety because of the new condition.

They said that their children accepted the scholarship at SAITM solely because of their interest in studying medicine and there was no political intervention behind the scholarships.

According to the parents, the majority of scholarship holders were with high A/L results and their parents were low-income receivers.

They said that the authorities had neglected them stating the scholarships were based on political intervention and refused to grant any relief.

“We assured that the students with top results would have no political connections and were granted the scholarship based on their talent. Our children have to suffer because of the tug-o-war between the two Governments,” a parent said.

They said that the SAITM degree was advertised as the University Grants Commission (UGC) approved one, and as such, the Government was responsible for their children’s education.

“We beg President and relevant Ministers to not to play with our children’s lives. If the SAITM degree was affordable to us then our children wouldn’t be selected for the scholarship scheme. Without checking our financial background, it was inhumane to just reject our children at KDU,” they stressed.

The Students Action Committee of SAITM in a letter had informed the injustice faced by the scholarship holders and said it would stage protests outside the Presidential Secretariat this week.

“We will even resort to fast unto death if our children were rejected today,” a disturbed parent said.

Although the SAITM institute had awarded scholarships to its students they would not be entitled financial scholarships at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), Minister of Higher Education Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said.

“KDU has no scholarship scheme,” he told.

Minister Rajapakshe explained that the SAITM had awarded scholarships under political grounds.

“SAITM scholarships are given on political patronage, not on merit,” he said.

He also said that SAITM founder Dr Neville Fernando accepted SAITM had awarded Rs. 400 million worth scholarships under the influence of politicians.

Minister Rajapakshe said that Dr Fernando had informed him that among them there were ten students who received Rs. 10 million worth scholarship each, under the influence of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He said the absorbing students at the KDU under the current financial ground were also agreed by SAITM parents then.

“KDU course fee is one-third of what they had to pay at the SAITM. By awarding scholarships to the students, we cannot make the KDU another SAITM. The Government had served the justice at its best to the students,” he added.

Government to taken back Malabe SLIIT Campus ? Cabinet paper next week !

Sri Lanka Government to take over SLIIT in Malabe Campus
Sri Lanka Government is considering to taken back Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology SLIIT in Malabe cancelling its transaction in 2015, Higher Education Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said.

Minister said the SLIIT would be operated as a fee-levying Government owned independent institution. Addressing a press conference at the University Grants Commission , he said a Cabinet paper to this effect was submitted last week and it would be taken up again next week.

He said the Cabinet paper proposed to appoint a ‘Board of Trustees’ composed of two higher officials each from the Presidential Secretariat and the Prime Minister’s Office, the Secretaries to the Higher Education Ministry and Education Ministry and about another five members with knowledge on university affairs to take over SLIIT and operate it under an Administrative Board.

He noted that any profit earned by the institution will be diverted to the Mahapola Trust Fund and used to facilitate more scholarships.

“This institute was started in 1999 on a 25 acre state land. It utilised Rs. 373 million from the Mahapola Trust Fund to construct its first building. Currently, there are 7,000 students in it. Initially its ownership was with the Government even though the management was run by a separate company. In 2015, the SLIIT was removed from the Mahapola Trust Fund and handed over to that company. The SLIIT had paid Rs.408 million to the Fund and had inked a new lease agreement for the land where Rs 20 million is paid to the Fund annually as lease. All SLIIT Director Board members were initially government officials, but now there is no single government official in it,” he explained.

He pointed out that Rs. 408 million was no way a reasonable amount as the assets of the University, even when the land value is excluded, amounts to at least Rs 20 billion. “Now there is no rightful owner to this institution. Who will take the responsibility of 7,000 students if it runs to any trouble?” he asked.

He said the above transaction had happened without the knowledge of the Mahapola Trust Fund.

Sri Lanka Political Crisis deepen. Fears growing among students

$

Sri Lanka Political Crisis Over three years ago students and lecturers played a key role behind the scenes in the defeat of Sri Lanka’s former president Mahinda Rajapaksa. But Rajapaksa is now back as prime minister after a sudden and unexpected move by the country’s president, Maithripala Sirisena.

Full Article - Click UWN

Sirisena unleashed a political cyclone after he pulled his party from the National Unity Government, a coalition of parties, on 26 October and later appointed Rajapaksa as prime minister, joining hands once again with the leader he ousted in 2015.

Sirisena also issued special gazettes Ranil Wickremesinghe (administrative regulations) to sack Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and his cabinet – in a move seen by many as unconstitutional – and suspended parliament until 16 November.

The storm of events sparked street protests and a heavy social media campaign by students and young people against the president’s “betrayal” of voters, while the pro-Rajapaksa camp celebrated sudden victory with fire crackers and later took control of government media. Clashes were reported in government institutions where one person was reported killed.

However, Sri Lanka’s major university students’ union seems curiously inactive despite their previous role in opposing Rajapaksa. Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) convener Lahiru Weerasekara told University World News the union was “not loyal to any party” and was not happy about the way the Unity government delivered on past promises.

“The Unity government came to power selling our slogans. They failed to fulfil their election promises, even for 6% of GDP [gross domestic product] for education,” he said. Instead, they continued to suppress students. Some 15 legal cases against student leaders on charges relating to protests and damage of public property during 2015-18 are still pending in the courts.
Fears are already growing among students over the new developments. On 27 October police stormed a university students’ hostel in Dehiwala, close to Colombo, and launched a search operation, possibly to gauge whether planned protests were related to the political situation in the country.

New Medical Faculty of Sabaragamuwa University to open Jan 17 in Ratnapura.

The new Medical Faculty of Sabaragamuwa University will be declared open in Batuhena, Ratnapura on January 17 by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.

The new faculty building and the professorial unit were constructed at a cost of Rs. 2 billion at the land adjacent to the Ratnapura Provincial General Hospital which would serve as the teaching hospital for the Faculty of Medicine and provide all clinical training facilities for the students. The Faculty would accommodate 75 students per intake.

Ratnapura General Hospital Director Sampath Ranaweera said in line with the opening of the Medical faculty, the Hospital will be converted into a teaching hospital on the same day in order to improve the free health services provided by the government.

The Ministry of Health Ministry in a statement said that according to a concept of Minister Rajitha Senaratne to expand medical education in Sri Lanka, three new faculties are set to be opened in affiliation with the Sabaragamuwa, Wayamba, and Moratuwa universities.

The Ratnapura General Hospital, Kuliyapitiya Base hospital, Kalutara General Hospital, and the Moratuwa district hospital are set to be refurbished in order to facilitate students of these faculties to engage in practical learning.
